Key News Overnight:
US stocks hit new all-time highs on Friday, and US Futures today are trading as though those records will be added to tonight, after the Trump administration flagged an imminent trade deal with China.
However, the absence of official confirmation of a deal from either side raised questions over whether the world’s two biggest economies can secure a truce in their trade war before a new round of tit-for-tat tariffs takes effect on Sunday.
In the UK, exit polls this morning are pointing to an 86-seat Conservative Party majority, a result that would deliver the Tories power in their own right. The markets have celebrated the outcome, with the door wide open now for UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to pass his Brexit deal through Parliament before its 31 January deadline.
Hong Kong demonstrators clashed with police late Sunday as Chief Executive Carrie Lam began a visit to Beijing.
Global oil prices rose to near 3-month highs on Friday. The US-China trade truce boosted investor hopes for an eventual lift in global crude oil demand. The most active Brent crude contract rose by US$1.02 or 1.6% to US$65.22 a barrel.
