Key News Overnight:
U.S. President Donald Trump is having second thoughts on escalating the trade war with China. “I have second thoughts about everything,” he said in a rare, initial expression of regret at the G-7, A White House spokesman then clarified what the president really meant and the comments were “greatly misinterpreted”.
Boris Johnson is stepping up his campaign to convince the EU to reopen Brexit negotiations, using the G-7 summit to test the bloc’s united front. The U.K. prime minister will tell EU leaders that the 39 billion-pound ($48 billion) divorce bill will be cut to 9 billion pounds.
A Hong Kong police officer fired a weapon, water cannons were deployed for the first time and multiple volleys of tear gas were launched in skirmishes with protesters in a 12th weekend of unrest. Police made at least 29 arrests as violence returned after the prior week’s peaceful rallies.
Crude slid to a two-week low on Friday after China announced tariffs on U.S. oil and Trump signalled, he may escalate the trade war. Gold closed at a six-year high, and silver also climbed. Copper and tin dropped on the LME.
