Key News Overnight:
Boris Johnson called for a snap election Dec. 12 to end the Brexit “nightmare.” He said a motion to trigger an early poll will be put before lawmakers Monday; it’ll require the support of two-thirds of Parliament to pass. And there’s a chance that happens, especially considering the EU is likely to grant a divorce extension until Jan. 31 when leaders meet Friday. That would alleviate opposition concerns about a no-deal exit come Oct. 31.
Mike Pence assailed China’s human rights record, singling out its actions against Hong Kong protesters, while calling for greater engagement with Beijing. The Vice President said the U.S. remains optimistic a trade deal can be reached.
U.S. stocks mostly gained as tech shares led the way. The S&P 500 traded above the 3,000 level, approaching its all-time high.
Oil traded higher as the North Sea Forties oil pipeline system was shut following a power loss.
Gold climbed above $1,500 an ounce, and platinum rose to the highest in more than three weeks. Nickel gained for a third day on concerns over a potential supply shortage.
