Spot gold climbed 0.8% to US$1,878/oz by 0605 GMT, while U.S. gold futures were up 1.3% at US$1,881/oz.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 263 points, or 0.9%, to 29,421, the S&P 500 lost 5 points, or 0.1%, to 3,546 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 160 points to 11,554.
