Key News Overnight:
China expects the U.S. will delay a threatened tariff increase set for Sunday, people familiar said. White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow pushed back on that, saying no decision has been reached yet. Both sides are focusing on de-escalating tensions by cutting import taxes currently in place rather than removing specific products from the target list.
Donald Trump faces two articles of impeachment unveiled by House Democrats. The president was accused of abuse of power and obstructing Congress’ efforts to investigate his dealings with Ukraine. The Judiciary Committee will vote on the issue this week, setting up a full House vote next week.
Nickel rebounded after slumping to a five-month low as “explosive” buying in the nickel market in Shanghai spilled over to London. In the four hours of night trading on the Shanghai Futures Exchange, 1.32 million contracts changed hands, more than triple the 100-day average for that time of day. The surge occurred after nickel on the London Metal Exchange fell below $13,000 a metric ton “Explosive buying from SHFE night desks in China helped boost buying in London and nickel up more than $500 from the lows”.
