Spot gold fell 1.1% to US$1,683/oz, after hitting its lowest since June 5 at US$1,676/oz.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 306 points, or 1%, to 31,802, the S&P 500 lost 21 points, or 0.5%, to 3,821 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 311 points, or 2.4%, to 12,609.
